Emily focuses her practice on special education advocacy. She grew up in California and graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts, where she balanced school with forest fire fighting during the summers. Following a Masters in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh, Emily graduated from Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University. She then clerked for the Chief Justice at the Ohio Supreme Court and was a staff attorney at OSU College of Law in the mediation practicum. Emily assisted in writing the Uniform Mediation Act and commentaries, and then lectured around Ohio on behalf of the State to explain mediation law.

Special education advocacy requires not only legal knowledge at the state and federal level, but an understanding of disabilities, educational theories and practices, and school environments. Emily has assisted private and public school clients, and negotiated initial and re-Evaluation Team Reports, initial and annual Independent Educational Evaluations, 504s, and student discipline.

One of the aspects Emily likes most about special education is the opportunity to educate and collaborate with students, parents, school districts, service providers, and state and local agencies. In addition to educating schools about their responsibilities in a way they will hear, her job is to connect parents with resources, teach them advocacy skills, and help them be knowledgeable and capable members of their child’s IEP team.

Emily lives in Bexley with her husband Mike, daughter Ellie, sons Brian and David, and dog Trace. She was fortunate enough to stay at home with her three children for quite a few years. With the gradual realization that her daughter’s struggles in reading were a form of dyslexia, Emily dove into special education first for her daughter, and then for others facing similar challenges. When she advocates for families, she does it from a parent and a legal perspective.
